FIC Researcher Aims to Discover if Obesity Increases Progression of Colon Cancer
Columbus, Ohio – FIC member Susan Olivo-Marston was recently funded by the Center for Advanced Functional Foods Research and Entrepreneurship (CAFFRE) and the OSUCCC-James Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer Research Program to investigate whether or not obesity contributes to colon cancer risks and if restricting calories reduces risks.
Olivo-Marston will replicate early on-set obesity in children by giving young mice a high-fat diet. One group of mice continues a high-diet while another group is placed on a regular diet. She will also examine data collected 2,000 women who have developed colon cancer.
